WEIL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2010 EDUCATIONAL GRANTS

At their Spring meeting the Weil Foundation Board awarded educational grants to 11 non profit institutions. The total amount granted was $561,000. The grants were awarded effective July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011.

Seven US Family practice Residency programs were awarded grants to support Integrative Medicine training throughout the three year residency curriculum. Incorporating training in Integrative Medicine within medical residency programs is the current top priority of the Weil Foundation. We believe that this will lead to a new group of physicians who will have expertise in prevention, nutrition, life style counseling and alternative therapies in addition to their training in conventional medicine.

Thee Family Practice residency programs receiving grants are: The Carolinas Medical Center (Charlotte, North Carolina), Maine-Dartmouth Family Practice (Augusta, Maine), Maine Medical Center (Portland, Maine), Mercer University (Macon, Georgia), University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston), Tufts Family Practice (Cambridge, Massachusetts), and the University of Wisconsin.

An award was made to the University of New Mexico Section of Integrative medicine to initiate training in Integrative Medicine in their Internal Medicine Residency; this will be the first residency in Internal Medicine in the US to include training in Integrative Medicine in their residency curriculum. We hope that it will be a model for other Internal Medicine Residency Programs.

An award was made to the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine which developed and administers the Integrative Medicine in Residency program.

In addition, awards were made to the Society for Integrative Oncology, and the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine.

Progress reports from some of these programs will be posted on this website in the future.
