About the Weil Foundation


About Andrew Weil, M.D.

Andrew Weil, M.D., is an internationally recognized leader in integrative medicine and expert in medical education, medical botany, and mind-body interactions. He has an A.B degree in biology (botany) from Harvard College and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He is a best-selling author of books on health, based in integrative medical philosophy. Dr. Weil holds the Jones/Lovell Endowed Chair in Integrative Rheumatology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, where he is also Clinical Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health. He is the founder and (unpaid) director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine there, which has trained more than 400 physicians and others in integrative medicine. Many alumni are now leading integrative medicine initiatives at other medical centers in the United States and abroad.


Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of the Foundation oversees its operations and approves all grants. Serving without compensation, they are respected and knowledgeable persons in business, philanthropy, and medicine: Andrew Weil, M.D., chair; Lura M. Lovell, vice-chair; Richard Baxter, secretary and treasurer; Donald Abrams, M.D.; Humberto S. Lopez; and Robert G. Sarver.

Staff

Two part-time staff members are James Dalen, M.D., executive director, and Nancy Olmstead, recording secretary.

Keeping administrative costs low

The Foundation spends no more than 15% of donated funds on administrative costs; at least 85% is allocated for grants and other charitable purposes.


Our operating principles

In its operations, the Weil Foundation seeks to express the values underlying integrative medicine and the best practices of philanthropy. The Foundation will:

  • Cooperate with other organizations in order to achieve the greatest impact
     
  • Treat all grant-seekers with respect
     
  • Provide clear and timely information to the public about the Foundation's policies, practices, decisions, and finances
     
  • Be open to new ideas, critiques, and suggestions, while also protecting itself from inappropriate influence by other institutions, donors, or government
     
  • Abide by the standards of practice enunciated by the Council of Foundations and by Independent Sector regarding the management of foundation and non-profit institutions
