What the Weil Foundation Supports
Through teaching, clinical practice, research, and public education over the past thirty years, Andrew Weil, M.D., has helped define and establish integrative medicine. His work has been part of a revolution in public attitudes and professional awakening about health and health care. The public has grown less passive and better informed about conventional medicine. People increasingly reach out to other traditions. They are impatient with health care delivery that treats them as body systems, not whole persons, and that still scarcely uses complementary and alternative resources. Physicians and others trained in conventional medicine increasingly seek to expand their knowledge and use of complementary and alternative approaches.
Costs - to patients, employers, and society - are a powerful factor in the growing interest in integrative medicine. With its emphasis on prevention, self-care, and less-costly, less-invasive interventions, integrative medicine holds the promise of reducing the now-unsupportable costs of health care.
The movement for new approaches to health, in keeping with the principles of integrative medicine, is well launched. But much innovation is needed and many barriers must be overcome if integrative medicine is to deliver on its promise for human health.
Andrew Weil, M.D., has created the Weil Foundation as a way of marshaling resources to help meet these challenges.
